Arizona and New Mexico
“Species at Risk” ListIn late 2001, an Interagency/Interstate (New Mexico and Arizona) Group was formed of state and federal agency biologists and Threatened and Endangered Species Program Managers to develop a comprehensive Species at Risk list for New Mexico and Arizona. The Interagency/Interstate Coordination Group has been supported and coordinated through the Southwest Strategy Endangered Species Act Team (SWESA). The finalization of the list in 2006 was funded through a Department of Defense Legacy Grant received by the SWESA Team. The list was developed by consulting with various experts (state and federal agencies, universities, and others) and various databases (Heritage, NatureServe, Arizona HDMS, etc), and/or other sources as necessary and was based upon a set of established criteria. Specifically, the criteria developed required the inclusion of federally proposed and candidate species, as well as those species which have been federally delisted within the last 5 years. Furthermore, other species could be added if they had Natural Heritage Rankings of G1-3 or S1-3, and/or if current knowledge indicated a high level of concern, if the species was State listed as threatened or endangered, if the species could be highly sensitive to indirect or cumulative effects of actions on the ground, and if it could be demonstrated that the species had importance at the periphery of its range and that was the situation in New Mexico and/or Arizona for the species. The final drafts have now been approved and SPECIEZnm is pleased to provide them below for our registered users. The list itself (Appendix E) includes over 450 vertebrate and invertebrate species. It provides a variety of information for each species, including land jurisdiction of known occurrences, Federal and State agency status, habitat requirements, and land management recommendations. The list is an Excel spreadsheet which prints out at approximately 51 pages. AppE_FINAL_SAR_LIST_Sep06.xls (732 KB) The MS Word document contains 65 pages of textual report. Species Accounts have been included for a few species on the Species at Risk list at this time, but more Species Accounts should be available in the future. FINAL_SAR_REPORT_Sept06.doc (737 KB) The PDF Report combines both files into one complete report (114 pages). FINAL_SAR_REPORT_Sept06.pdf (1,256 KB)
